Overview of the Transition to Teaching English as a New Language Graduate Certificate

Candidates enrolled in IWU’s English as a New Language graduate certificate program will earn Indiana licensure in grades P-12 for English Learners. They will learn to apply subject matter expertise, assessment knowledge, and differentiated instructional practices for rich learning environments in an English as a New Language (ENL) classroom.
The role of ENL educator is an opportunity to inspire students with diverse language backgrounds as they engage in the classroom. An educator can expand the horizons of a student through effective identification of cultural and linguistic needs to develop a culturally responsive learning plan with high standards for success. Empower students, families, and communities through language by earning this certificate and Indiana licensure.
The 24-credit hour program provides hands-on learning with field experience designed into each course. The final course, a 14-week student teaching experience, gives real-world experience in an ENL classroom. While pursuing this certificate through IWU candidates get online classes in BrightSpace LMS with classroom-based clinical experiences. Candidates also enjoy devotions, discussions, projects, reflections, and field assignments with doctoral credentialed faculty and the result for each candidate is licensure for grades P-12 English Learners in Indiana.
While in class and in field experiences, candidates will learn to articulate the progress and demonstrate knowledge of language acquisition and development. Candidates will be able to describe school, district, and government policies and legislation to advocate for resources to support culturally and linguistically diverse language learners. They will also administer appropriate assessments and analyze data to make data-driven instructional decisions. Candidates will effectively consider the input of other educators, school personnel, and families to create and modify materials and resources.
Candidates who successfully complete the program can become ENL educators earning a median national salary of $57,000 and the satisfaction of watching students grow to expand their horizons of possibility.

Your tuition rate will remain the same as long as you remain continuously enrolled in the same program. - Earned a baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) verified on original transcripts sent by the institution directly to Indiana Wesleyan University with one of the following:
- GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale from an institution of higher education, or
- GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale from an institution of higher education and five (5) years of professional experience in an education related field, or
- Proof that the individual has passed the state-approved content area examinations.
- A criminal history background check that meets School of Integrated Learning and Development guidelines.
- Submit a signed FERPA Release Form.
NOTE: Applicants should be aware that Indiana State Legislation has mandated that expanded background checks are required for those working with students in Indiana schools. Applicants will also be required to adhere to any additional State Mandates required for educators. Though candidates will be required to submit an initial background check that is acceptable to the university as a part of their application materials, that successful background report will only serve to gain admittance to that academic program. School corporations are governed by a locally elected Board of Trustees who set policy for their school corporation. All accepted students should understand that additional background checks will most likely be required by school corporations before participating in clinical experiences.
- To be eligible to be recommended for licensure a candidate must:
- Complete all course requirements with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and no grade lower than a "B-."
- Successfully complete all Clinical Experience requirements associated with the program.
- Provide passing scores for all required state licensure content and pedagogy examinations.
- Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a certificate.
Upon completion of the Transition to Teaching – English as a New Language program, candidates will be recommended for P-12 English Learners Licensure to Speakers of Other Languages teacher licensure in Indiana. Candidates seeking licensure in states other than Indiana bear the responsibility to determine whether completion of the IWU Transition to Teaching – English as a New Language program will meet the academic and assessment requirements of the state in which licensure is sought.
