Master of Public Affairs
What is the MPA degree?
The Master of Public Affairs (MPA) is a professional degree for those interested in a public service career involving governmental operations or public policy. The MPA degree is an interdisciplinary degree, drawing from the fields of management, political science, economics, law, and sociology. Therefore, MPA coursework focuses on diverse areas of public management and public policy in order to equip graduates with public sector knowledge and a wide-ranging practical skill set to address important problems of society or within public sector organizations. This skill set includes the areas of research and writing, finance, ethics, policy analysis, economics, and public sector management.
Public Service: Making a Difference
What makes public service careers so unique and rewarding is the emphasis on “making a difference.” Many challenging issues are being faced by today’s governmental leaders. These issues are complex and require talented individuals who are dedicated to developing workable solutions. Consider the following complex issues facing us today:
- Securing the United
States against the possibility of terrorism
decaying urban areas that have experienced economic decline and an increase in
veterans back into society as productive citizens
- Providing quality
education, health care, housing and healthy food to children living in poverty
These kinds of challenges are just one small part of what today’s public sector leaders are tackling in their professional careers.
Many public service professionals are involved in providing vital day-to-day services in cities, counties, and states. These professionals are continually challenged to provide new and expanding services to meet the demands of an ever-changing population. Citizens often expect their public leaders to “do more with less.” They expect their governments to be more transparent and connected by involving citizens in public policy discussions and debates in new and innovative ways. Because they come face to face with citizens who need their help and assistance, public sector professionals are able to influence the direction of their organizations, guide public policy, and impact the lives of citizens in real and meaningful ways.
