IWU Music Therapy partners with IU Health

Sep. 11, 2017

Indiana Wesleyan University’s Division of Music is excited to announce a new partnership with IU Health. The affiliation between IWU’s Music Therapy Program and IU Health will allow IWU Music Therapy majors to gain practicum and internship experience with the professional music therapists employed in IU Health locations. The primary placement location will be Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis.

“This gives our students a chance to observe and/or gain some hands on experience in a medical setting, which is an area that we have been trying to build in our practicum placements,” said Rebecca Barnard, professor of Music Therapy. “It will also allow our students to learn from other established music therapists and benefit from the knowledge they have to share.”

IWU’s Music Therapy program, established in 2014, is housed within the Division of Music and is fully accredited by the American Music Therapy Association and the National Association of Music. The program prepares students for the health profession that uses music and musical experiences to maintain and improve a person’s functioning level in a variety of health domains. The program currently has 50 majors enrolled.

“I greatly appreciate the work that Professors Barnard and Kendra Hoffert have done to make this program grow over the last several years,” said Michael Flanagin, division chair, IWU Division of Music. “I also appreciate the work of other faculty that helped launch this program including Dr. Todd Guy, Dr. Lisa Dawson and Dr. Chris Lessly.”
