IWU hosts national math conference

IWU Hosts National Math Conference

Jun. 03, 2019

Indiana Wesleyan University hosted the 22nd Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences (ACMS) Biennial Conference on May 29 – June 1 on its Marion campus. Approximately 145 mathematical sciences faculty and professionals were in attendance.

The featured speakers at the conference included:

  • Ken Ono, who is serving as vice president of the American Mathematical Society and will be chair of the Mathematics Department at the University of Virginia starting in the fall of 2019. He has received numerous awards and honors, including a Sloan Fellowship, a Presidential Early Career Award, a Packard Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
  • Joan L. Richards, who is the director of the Program of Science and Technology Studies and professor of history at Brown University. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University and received a Guggenheim Fellowship and served as fellow at the Max Planck Institute.
  • A third speaker from the FBI’s cybersecurity squad also spoke on threats and successes of cybersecurity.

Nearly 90 parallel sessions were held on content, pedagogy, history, and faith and integration topics in mathematics, statistics and computer science.

“The ACMS links Christian faith with mathematics and computer science,” said Dr. Melvin Royer, chair, Division of Mathematics and Computer Information Sciences. “Conference guests share ways to bring faith connections into their own classrooms and personal lives. God’s truth is alive in all disciplines, and we want to bring Him glory through our daily technical work.”

The ACMS was founded in 1977 as a network of Christian mathematicians dedicated to integrating mathematics with faith and to promote quality teaching.
