BIOGRAPHY

Professor Kim DeMichael grew up in New England and has 31 years of teaching experience. She has trained and supervised teacher candidates in Massachusetts and Indiana. She served in California as a full-time high school science teacher. In addition to teaching Biology, Physical Science, and Science for English Language Learners, her public school work included science department chairperson, head volleyball coach, club sponsor, and a variety of district and state committees. These experiences led her to pursue doctoral studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her study and research focused on teacher effectiveness and training with a cognate in curriculum design for students of diverse backgrounds. Her experience in large, diverse, and multilingual high schools sparked a desire to help prepare teacher candidates for the opportunities and challenges of today’s classrooms. Her passion for making content relevant and meaningful for adolescent students is rooted in a firm belief that every student is fearfully and wonderfully made, in the image of God, with divine potential. All teachers are better prepared to serve the needs of their students when they are empowered to bring a sense of purpose (faith), along with their knowledge and skills to the classroom.

INTERESTS

Kim’s research interests continue to be teacher preparation, teacher effectiveness, and curriculum design for student-centered active learning. She enjoys visiting the rocky coast of Maine as well as sports, music, travel, reading historical fiction and biographies.
