Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) announces it will host New York Times columnist and PBS NewsHour commentator David Brooks on April 4, 2024.
Dr. Erin E. Devers, Professor of Psychology, will moderate the conversation with Brooks concerning his recently released book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Brooks’ book has been the subject of a recent study by many members of administration, making this event the perfect capstone to discussions which have been going on for months. Dr. Aly Williams, Vice President of Academic Affairs, will serve as the evening’s host and President Jon S. Kulaga will offer the invocation.
Regarding this event, Dr. Williams said, “Indiana Wesleyan University is committed to providing academic opportunities to promote personal growth and development and create a sense of belonging within our university community. This spring, David Brooks' book How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Other Deeply and Being Deeply Seen has been the focus of one such opportunity. Using themes presented in the book and emphasizing Jesus' command to love one another, we are learning to listen better and engage in more meaningful ways with those whose experiences may be different from our own. David's visit to campus is the culmination of this effort and gives the IWU community an amazing opportunity to engage directly with the author. We hope this visit serves as a catalyst for fostering a more welcoming campus environment.”
The conversation will take place at 7:30 PM in the auditorium of the Phillippe Performing Arts Center (PPAC) on Indiana Wesleyan’s Campus. The evening is organized by the Lumen Research Institute.
