Counseling Degree

Integrating Professional Counseling and Faith

Indiana Wesleyan University's Division of Graduate Counseling offers a Master of Arts degree with a major in Counseling with six separate counseling specializations:

All specializations are available on a part-time or full-time basis. We also offer a Post-Master's Degree Certificate for persons who desire to take a sequence of courses to become eligible for licensure in a different profession than the one in which they were trained, and an Addictions Counseling Certificate for persons seeking to augment their professional preparation by taking a sequence of specialized courses in addictions counseling. Each program within the division is designed to meet or exceed the highest standards of professional excellence.

The Division of Graduate Counseling is dedicated to training high quality professionals who are competent to work with diverse populations within their area of specialization. The faculty is dedicated to training and mentoring students with an integrated understanding of Christian faith and professional practice with emphasis on student, academic, professional, and cultural competence.

Clinical Emphasis

Clinical experience is the centerpiece of all IWU Graduate Counseling programs. Skill-building under the careful supervision of experienced faculty begins in the first semester of study, continues into on-site practicums, and culminates with community-based internships. Live supervision and the digital recording of sessions enable clinical training to be tailored to address the specific needs and strengths of the counseling trainee. The division is home to the Graduate Counseling Clinics, state-of-the-art facilities that offer free counseling services to the Marion and Indianapolis communities. By serving in these clinics, students are guaranteed to deliver a level of service that is in alignment with diverse populations presenting issues typical of community and university service delivery systems.

Assistantships and Scholarships

The division offers a number of assistantships and scholarships. For those students with aspirations for a doctoral degree, a number of research opportunities are available. Faculty regularly co-present with students at regional and national conferences. Opportunities for submitting articles for publication in professional journals abound. What better way to be socialized into the counseling profession than to be mentored by recognized faculty within a dynamic community of learners!

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, and School Counseling specializations are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), 1001 N. Fairfax St., Suite 510, Alexandria, VA 22314, 703-535-5990. Through the Addictions Counseling specialization, Indiana Wesleyan University is an Approved Education Provider of NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals.
