Aiming for the C-Suite: A Conversation with an MBA Graduate

Jamyllah Payne is an IWU-National and Global Master of Business Administration (MBA) alumna from Cincinnati, Ohio. She specialized in healthcare administration from 2016-2018 and is currently an Ohio physician office practice manager. We asked Jamyllah a few questions to see why she began her journey to her master’s and how it has impacted her since.

What was your undergraduate experience?
I attended undergrad at Wilberforce University in Ohio. I was a biology major.

What did you do in between undergrad and grad school?
I completed my LPN and obtained more on job experience in management/leadership.

Before attending grad school, did you see any benefit in getting an MBA from people around you, people you work with, etc.?
I felt that it would boost my career aspirations. I want to be a CEO of a healthcare organization, and this is one of the requirements.

What made you want to get your MBA?
Seeing the CEO of the healthcare system I was with at the time. Even though he was an older man, I felt that everything he had I could too if I furthered my education.

Were there any specific reasons that helped finalize your decision to get your MBA?
Tenacity; once I put my mind to something, I am like a dog with a bone.

What experiences during your time at IWU have stuck with you the most and why?
I loved the structure of the online classes. The teachers were available when I needed, and the assignments kept me on my toes.

How has having an MBA been effective in your post-college career?
I have not seen the fruits of my labor yet. I am still doing the groundwork to get to the level of success that I desire. My degree is still useful because it is allowing my profile to stand out above the rest in the same position that I currently hold.

What are some valuable lessons you learned while earning your MBA that have stuck with you?
I learned that you must be steadfast with your goals and that anything worthwhile is not easy. I had to learn better time management, budgeting and patience.

What would you say to prospective students thinking about pursuing an MBA?
Make sure that you set up your career aspirations early. You will need to make valuable and lasting connections that will help you to reach the level of success that you desire.
