Indiana Wesleyan Takes a Christian Perspective to Health Care

"Therefore, I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'" Deuteronomy 15:11

Follow Your Vocation as a Christian Nurse

The Lord calls us to care for each other in our day-to-day lives. Christian nurses turn this command into a job, caring for patients' physical and spiritual health. If you feel called to a career in health care, Indiana Wesleyan's Nursing program may be the perfect fit for you. Ranking as a top 20 Best College for Nursing in 2021 and #3 Best College for Nursing in Indiana, IWU Nursing cares deeply for the personhood of their students and teaches them to do the same for their patients.

Learn from Leaders Who Care

Indiana Wesleyan University's Nursing program prides itself on preparing students for leadership roles in their future careers. Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, IWU-Marion's Nursing program offers a modernized curriculum supported by a caring faculty with a wealth of experience to prepare nurses for healthcare delivery in the 21st century.

The Nursing program's qualified faculty actively engage in clinical practice and research to offer the best resources. The size of the program allows faculty and professors to provide individualized student advice, whether that be in the context of offering educational or spiritual support.

Each class is taught from a Christian worldview in alignment with Christian values, teaching students that each patient was created by God in the image Christ. Our professors view their role as a nurse educator their calling from Christ and passionately serve from this perspective.

Develop a Sense of Self

Indiana Wesleyan University recognizes the importance of supporting growth in multiple aspects of students' lives. All IWU students receive a full liberal arts education through which they learn many valuable skills to support them in the future.

Community holds an instrumental role at the University, and our hope for students is that they support each other's spiritual needs as they follow God's word and grow in faith together. Students will take many courses from a Christian perspective, spend time in prayer and worship together in chapel, and participate in a multitude of other activities that contribute to their well-being.

Faculty encourage students to explore their own spirituality, so they can later offer spiritual care to patients in their profession. This is not a philosophy that all other nurses share, but it has made IWU Nursing successful. The level of compassion and respect with which our students present patients is one we believe can only come from the love of Jesus.

Go Where the Spirit Calls

Unique to Indiana Wesleyan's Nursing program, students are required to participate in a transcultural component in which they will learn to serve patients from many walks of life around the world. Healthcare is not an exact science, and the concept of health varies in meaning throughout different cultures. IWU believes that introducing students to different perspectives makes them better nurses equipped with the resources to care for many patients globally.

The program offers a variety of study abroad opportunities spanning lengths of time to meet the needs of each student. Semester-long programs are offered to students who desire the chance to embed themselves more fully in another culture.

Not everyone who studies abroad must leave the country; IWU also offers many domestic opportunities to meet the transcultural component and serve patients here in the United States.

IWU opens many doors for career and life experiences of all kinds. There are a variety of opportunities for nurses to continue serving God post-grad through missionary roles. IWU has, for example, wonderful global relationships with La Gonave Wesleyan Hospital in Haiti; Zimba Mission Hospital in Africa; and Shenyang Medical College in China.

As a missionary and a Christian nurse, graduates will have the chance to demonstrate God's love and share their Christian faith around the world while pursuing their career vocation in healthcare. Indiana Wesleyan has connections with multiple faith-based organizations that they can leverage to help graduates follow their calling.
