MA Sports Leadership


About the Program

The Master of Arts degree with a major in Sports Leadership will provide graduates with the fundamental knowledge of leadership theory and skills to practice leadership in the global sports management industry. Students will engage in an interdisciplinary core of leadership courses with peers from other types of organizations, including business, nonprofit, government, military and ministry to provide a rich context for the practice of leadership. Students will also engage a specific sports leadership curriculum that will build upon practical application of current professional engagement while it prepares students for a variety of sport-related occupations including fitness clubs, wellness organizations, and professional or intercollegiate sports teams Upon completion of the program students should be able to:

  1.  Synthesize historical and contemporary leadership theories with knowledge of sports industry operations to guide the effective practice of organizational leadership.
  2. Synthesize faith, the curriculum, and the practical application of the current professional engagement as part of a character-based and ethical practice of organizational leadership within the sports industry. 
  3. Analyze the sources and consequences of organizational problems, as well as appropriate interventions, to help the organization achieve its goals.
  4. Evaluate the change and learning needs of an organization to implement a strategic plan and redirect an organization toward its goals. 
  5. Evaluate the competencies required of leaders to lead effectively in the contemporary multicultural and global contexts.

Tuition & Financial Aid

30 Total $490 / credit hour

*Effective July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

The total cost of the program, including tuition, books, and fees, will be determined prior to your enrollment. The cost will be divided into several payments spread over the course of the program. Course textbooks will be shipped to you before each course begins. The cost of books increases for shipments outside of the 48 contiguous United States.

The total credit hours and per-credit-hour costs listed above are effective for the core program. For prerequisite or other required courses if applicable, students will need to pay for appropriate tuition, books, and any additional fees. Costs may change if you withdraw from the program and restart in a future program at a later date.

Admission Requirements

  1. A baccalaureate degree completed at an institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate work.

Graduation Requirements

  1. All 30 credits required in the curriculum sequence with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum grade of "C" in each course. A grade of "C-" or below will require the course to be repeated.
  2. Overall GPA of 3.0 in all IWU graduate work.
  3. Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.

1. Transcripts

College: Official transcripts are required from each undergraduate regionally accredited institution attended. Indiana Wesleyan University will accept for its permanent file only those transcripts sent in a sealed envelope directly to IWU by the registrar of the attended institution(s). Official transcripts must exhibit the official seal and signature of the registrar. Transcripts that are stamped "student copy," "issued to student," or "unofficial" cannot be accepted as official.

College Transcripts from Non-U.S. Schools: For college transcripts from non-U.S. schools, secure a "Course-by-Course Report" from Educational Credential Evaluators ( ECE). Be sure to request that the report be sent directly to us at the address below. The evaluation must list course-by-course hours and grades.
