What will I learn in this Bachelor's Degree in English Language Arts?

Candidates will apply strategies for word recognition, fluency, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension to effectively interpret a variety of texts. Students will also gain practical expertise in creating written works across multiple modes (narrative, persuasive, analytical, etc.) using appropriate conventions, processes, and strategies. They will evaluate informational and persuasive texts by examining themes, structures, literary devices, rhetorical strategies, and more. Applicable fees for resources and services will be assessed throughout the program. Tuition and fees for prerequisites and required elective courses are in addition to the charges shown on the program cost sheet. What You'll Study

The 90-credit hour online bachelor's degree in English Language Arts program provides participants with the qualifications to excel as a secondary teacher in the field of English language arts. Candidates will learn to design a safe, productive, equitable, and inclusive learning environment using sound classroom management strategies and high standards for all secondary learners. They will also demonstrate professional, moral, and ethical behaviors and dispositions grounded in related biblical principles. After having obtained their teacher licensure, participants will be prepared to begin teaching students at the secondary education level, including middle school and high school students

Program Requirements

The admission requirements are as follows:

  • Proof of high school graduation or GED certification.
  • Original transcripts from all previous college or university study at college or university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • A signed FERPA Release Form.
  • A criminal history background check that meets school guidelines.
  • Competency-based education candidates must successful complete the student Education CBE Orientation course.

The following graduation requirements must be met:

  • Completion of 90 semester hours.
  • Completion of 30 hours of general education requirements as specified (See the General Education Requirements).
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Completion of the required major courses with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Successfully complete all Clinical Experience requirements associated with the program.
  • Provide passing scores for all required state licensure content and pedagogy examinations.
  • Payment of all tuition and fees is required to receive a diploma.
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Education with a major in Secondary English Language Arts, candidates will be recommended for a 5-12 Educator Licensure in the state of Indiana. Candidates seeking licensure in states other than Indiana bear the responsibility to determine whether completion of the program will meet the academic and assessment requirements of the state in which licensure is sought.
