Indiana Wesleyan University launches automotive technology program expanding career-focused pathways

Marion, Ind. (May 29, 2026) — Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) is expanding its academic offerings with the launch of a new automotive technology program designed to provide students with a hands-on, career-connected pathway into the workforce.

The program combines paid, on-the-job training in professional dealership service centers with online coursework, allowing students to gain real-world experience while staying near home and earning college credit. The model reflects a growing demand for flexible, skills-based education that connects learning directly to career outcomes.

“At IWU, we believe every person is called to meaningful work, and that calling can take many forms,” said IWU President Jon Kulaga, Ph.D. “This program extends our mission by creating an additional pathway for students who want to build practical skills, earn an income, while growing in character, scholarship, and leadership at the same time. These are three missional pillars at IWU.”

The program leads to an Associate of Science in Automotive Technology and includes industry-recognized certifications in areas such as diagnostics, engine performance, and electrical systems. Students are embedded in dealership environments, working alongside experienced technicians while developing technical expertise and professional habits.

This statewide initiative is supported by a $1 million grant from the State of Indiana, matched by a $1 million investment from IWU, and represents a key component of the university’s broader Momentum Plan to expand career-oriented education.

“This is about connecting education more directly to opportunity,” said Christopher Lagoni, Ph.D., program director. “Students are gaining experience in real work environments while developing the communication and leadership skills that prepare them for long-term success.”

Founding dealership partners include Rohrman Automotive Group, Mercedes-Benz of Indianapolis, Tom Wood Auto Group, Penske Honda, and Tom Roush Lincoln, representing over 20 dealerships across the state of Indiana. Through these partnerships, students build professional relationships that provides pathways to full-time employment.

In addition to technical training, students complete coursework in communication and leadership, ensuring they graduate with both job-ready skills and an academic foundation.

“This program reflects IWU’s commitment to developing the whole person,” said Linda Manganello, Ph.D., IWU chief of staff. “Students leave not only with the ability to perform in a technical role, but with the confidence, character, and skills to grow throughout their careers.”

IWU plans to build on this model with future programs in additional skilled trades, continuing to expand pathways that align education with desired workforce needs.
