With a 1:15 faculty-to-student ratio, IWU is built for mentorship. Pre-med students work alongside PhD-trained faculty in the classroom, in the lab, and in one-on-one advising sessions — not in lecture halls of hundreds. Your advisor knows your goals and your challenges and can give you support that is genuinely tailored to you.
Medical schools look for applicants who have engaged with the healthcare world firsthand. At IWU, that experience is built into the program.
The Hodson Research Institute is IWU's flagship research program for biology and chemistry students. It offers full-time, paid summer research positions under the direct guidance of IWU faculty, giving pre-med students the kind of hands-on lab experience that sets graduate and medical school applications apart. Students have co-authored papers on neural transmission, bacterial genomics, HIV, and more, and have presented findings at local, regional, and national conferences.
IWU students gain real clinical exposure through internship placements at healthcare institutions including Marion General Hospital, Parkview Health, and Lutheran Health Network, as well as industry partners such as Corteva and BW Fusion. These experiences help students build clinical hours, develop professional relationships, and confirm their path before they apply to professional school.
Pre-med students at IWU can also pursue field-based learning through the Au Sable Institute, a Christian consortium offering environmental science courses in Michigan, Oregon, and Costa Rica. IWU's own Wildcat Farm provides hands-on training in sustainable agriculture and environmental science while producing food for the campus community.

Pre-med programs are demanding by design. Medical schools want students who have proven they can handle rigorous coursework, and IWU gives you the support system to do exactly that.

Pre-med is an advising track, not a standalone major. Students complete required science prerequisites — biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics — while pursuing a degree in any major field they choose. Faculty advisors help you build a four-year plan, track your progress, and prepare for the MCAT and professional school applications.
Getting into medical school is highly competitive. Admissions committees evaluate the full picture of a student's undergraduate experience — and IWU students are ready for that scrutiny. At IWU, 85% of students who complete the pre-med program are accepted into a health professional school.
