First Destination Survey
The First Destination Survey (created by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, NACE) captures information regarding how new college graduates fare in their careers within three months of graduation.
The annual initiative provides clear, concise, and consistent data on the outcomes associated with a college education on a national scale. Outcomes include 1) types of employment—full/part time, contract/freelance; 2) additional education, e.g., accepted to graduate or professional school; 3) still seeking either employment or further education; 4) and starting salary for those employed full time. In addition to providing outcomes for individual graduating classes, the First Destination Survey is designed to provide trends data over time to inform the discussion about the value of higher education.
Career Outcome Rate
The percent of graduates who fall into one of the following five categories:
- Employed Full Time - graduate works for 30 hours or more per week
- Employed Part Time - graduate works less than 30 hours per week
- Volunteer Service - graduate participates in a volunteer or service program
- Military Service - graduate serves in the U.S. Armed Forces
- Continuing Education - graduate accepted into a program of further study
Knowledge Rate
The percent of graduates for which the institution has verifiable information concerning post-graduation career activities. NACE guidelines suggests a minimum of 65% knowledge rate to be a credible survey.
Excellence Rate
The percent of graduates who are employed or continuing education within their field of study.
