At Wesley Seminary, we are firm believers that new churches and fresh expressions of the gospel will always be an essential strategy to reaching those who don’t know Jesus Christ. We also believe that the Seminary’s role is to help mobilize and equip the local church; therefore, we are committed to encouraging and equipping church planters and multiplying pastors. We believe the specialization in Church Planting and Multiplication will provide leaders with the necessary knowledge, experience, skills, and confidence in order to initiate new churches, sites, and venues within many diverse cultures across the globe.

Whether you are doing the specialization as part of the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts in Ministry programs or as a certificate, it is designed to be done “on the run” while you are serving or volunteering in ministry. The Church Planting & Multiplication specialization consists of four courses designed to train multiplication minded churches, pastors, and current or future planters. Whether you plan to start a new church, a new campus, or even a new venue, this program will help you:

  • Develop practical skills needed to plant a new church, campus, or venue.
  • Become familiar with the preeminent resources in church multiplication.
  • Determine a framework for exegeting a specific culture and context.
  • Develop an extensive vision and strategic plan document for a future initiative.
  • Acquire an enhanced knowledge in the theology and praxis of church multiplication.

CORE: The Calling, Character and Competency of a Church Multiplier

This course focuses on the core of an effective leader’s calling, character, and competency within a multiplication context. Emphasis will be given to the leader’s development in the areas of spiritual formation, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and relational aptitude.

LAUNCH: Initiating Effective New Churches, Sites and Venues

This course is designed to provide principles and practices for the pre-launch and launch processes of a church plant, site, or venue. Emphasis will be given to discerning the new church, site, or finding venue model and strategy clarity, developing a philosophy of ministry, exegeting a cultural context, connecting with the community, recruiting a core team, designing the worship gatherings, and creating an efficient leadership structure. This course will provide students with a culturally adaptable framework for the development of a new initiative.

THRIVE: Maximizing the Post-Launch Phase

This course addresses the challenges of the post-launch process in years two-to-ten, including personal health, soul care, leadership development, evangelism fervor, discipleship formation, financial management, spiritual warfare, and organizational management. This course utilizes learning experiences of successful multiplication movements in their post-launch years.
