Wesley Seminary formalizes partnership with Covenant Church

Marion, Ind., (Oct. 2, 2026) — Indiana Wesleyan University’s (IWU) Wesley Seminary has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Covenant Church, a growing Global Methodist Church in Greenville, N.C. This formal framework for the two organizations signifies the beginning of a partnership for collaborative initiatives as Covenant launches its residency program in January 2027.

Covenant's inaugural residency cohort includes three residents who have already applied to Wesley Seminary and plan to begin their theological education journey in upcoming semesters, with the first having already started in August. Beyond the residency program, the partnership creates opportunities for expanded academic access, experiential learning, and resource sharing between the two organizations.

“At Wesley Seminary, we believe theological education is at its best when it is deeply connected to the life and mission of the local church,” said Yamil Acevedo, executive vice president of Wesley Seminary. “Covenant Church shares our passion for forming Christ-centered leaders through both rigorous theological education and meaningful ministry experience. We are excited to come alongside Covenant as they invest in the next generation of leaders for the Church.”

Founded in 1993 by those with a heart to reach people, Covenant Church began with an invitation campaign that led to 365 people attending its first service. What started in a cow pasture within an unconventional building grew into a thriving church known for innovation, unapologetically Christian faith, and a commitment to helping people find their place and purpose, to become a movement of people that live and love like Jesus.

Over the years, Covenant has expanded through new facilities, campus launches, and the use of technology to reach people beyond its walls. Likewise, IWU and Wesley Seminary faithfully display similar commitments to steadfast growth, agile innovation, and an unshakable, Christ-centered faith to forge world changers who do whatever it takes to help people know and follow Jesus.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to collaboration and creates a framework for future partnership. As Covenant Church launches its residency program, both organizations look forward to expanding opportunities that prepare Christ-centered leaders for ministry and service.
