Faculty Profile
Dr. Samuel L. Young has taught at Indiana Wesleyan since 2023. He received his MA in Historical Theology from Marquette University and a PhD in American History from Baylor University. Dr. Young teaches a wide variety of History classes, including the American History surveys and upper-division courses on Latin American History, the US Constitution, American Foreign Relations, Political Parties, and the era of the Renaissance and Reformation. As a former high-school history teacher, Dr. Young loves working with History majors, History minors, and mentoring Social Studies education students.
Dr. Young’s research focuses on religion and culture in American History. His first book, Saint of the Republic: The American Myth of Martin Luther (forthcoming, Oxford University Press), examines the reception of Martin Luther in American history. He has published peer-reviewed studies in The New Mercersburg Review, U.S. Catholic Historian, Lutheran Quarterly, Church History, and The Oxford Handbook of Seventh-Day Adventism. He was the 2021 recipient of the Sidney E. Mead prize from the American Society of Church History. Dr. Young is currently writing an article on the Knights of Luther, a short-lived Progressive Era competitor to the Knights of Columbus, and a book-length study on the religious history of early baseball.
INTERESTS
In his free time, Dr. Young enjoys spending time outside, traveling with his family (wife Cassie, sons Oliver and Will, and daughter Faye), and cheering on America’s team, the Milwaukee Brewers.
