Faculty Profile
Dr. Mike Tapper (or 'Tapper,' as he's often called) is especially energized when he's helping students explore how their Christian belief takes shape in everyday practice. He designs his classes so that students can wrestle with important theological questions, while also challenging them to consider how those convictions are embodied in real Christian communities. He's a constructivist and engagement-focused teacher, by nature, who's inspired to create learning environments where students actively participate and ask honest questions, rather than just memorize ideas. Outside the classroom, he also leads Worship Leader Research, a team of academic, industry, and church leaders who study the attitudes and trends associated with today's worship leaders.
Before entering higher education, Mike served in pastoral ministry and continues to care a lot about bridging the gap between Christian theology and the realities of the Church. These days, he's also curious about mentoring students as they thoughtfully integrate emerging technologies with faithful Christian reflection and ministry preparation.
Outside the classroom, Mike enjoys conversations about almost any sport (but especially hockey), DIY projects for his fixer-upper home, and cheering on IWU's many-gifted students. He also enjoys spending time with his family and other interesting people he's met along the way.
