Courses

Begin your journey by exploring various methodologies for teaching the core literacy skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—to primary-grade students. You'll learn to align literacy standards with structured literacy principles and the Science of Reading, ensuring your instruction is research-based and effective.

Discover strategies to help students understand not just how to read, but why we read—whether to gain information, experience pleasure, explore new worlds, or communicate our thoughts and experiences with others. You'll also learn differentiation techniques to support struggling learners and challenge those who excel.

As part of this badge, you'll establish a field experience partnership with a K-3 school and collaborative teacher, identifying a student who is either beginning their literacy journey or experiencing reading/writing challenges. This real-world connection will ground your learning in authentic classroom practice.

Immerse yourself in the practical application of literacy instruction through hands-on learning experiences. This badge takes you through a read-aloud lesson as if you were teaching in your own classroom, and you'll master techniques for teaching irregular words—helping students navigate the complexities of English without creating fear or avoidance.

An important component of this badge is developing self-awareness as a learner and educator. You'll learn to recognize when information feels overwhelming and practice stress-management techniques that support your own learning. Understanding your emotional and physical responses to challenging content will help you empathize with your students' learning experiences and model resilience and excitement for learning.

You'll also be encouraged to explore the etymology of words, deepening your understanding of language patterns and exceptions—knowledge that will enrich your teaching and spark curiosity in your students.

In this culminating badge, you'll confirm completion of all assignments and assessments from Badges 1 and 2, demonstrating your mastery of literacy instruction principles and your successful completion of field experience requirements.

Upon finishing all components, you'll receive your ECED 331 Badge Certification, validating your readiness to teach literacy in the primary grades with confidence, competence, and a research-informed approach.
