Teaching Phonics and Language Structure

EDRE-535: Teaching Phonics and Language Structure

This Teaching Phonics and Language Structure learning path is designed to deepen your understanding of the complex variables that contribute to successful phonics and language structure instruction. You will review the research behind the science and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) standards for effective reading instruction for all learners. You'll learn to implement research-based strategies that support diverse learners in their literacy development.

In this badge, you will examine, in practice, considerations for phonological and phonemic awareness, including: articulatory features of phonemes, spelling-sound correspondence, and syllables, as well as planning phonological and phonemic awareness instruction using a variety of multi-sensory activities, including students with diverse learning needs.

Objectives

This badge will support you in mastering the foundational principles of phonological and phonemic awareness, focusing on the following International Dyslexia Association (IDA) standards:

  • IDA 4A: Integrate essential principles and practices of structure literacy instruction.
  • IDA 4B: Examine considerations for phonological and phonemic awareness.
  • IDA 4C: Implement considerations for phonics and word recognition.

In this badge, you will apply the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction, as well as implement considerations for phonics and word recognition. You will do this by learning how to understand phonics patterns and how to relate them to connected, decodable texts. This will help you develop differentiated instruction (DI) for students in each language/literacy domain, and create learning activities/tasks that utilize 2-3 modalities simultaneously, thereby enhancing your literacy intervention and instructional strategies.

Throughout this badge, you will review considerations for phonics and word recognition by understanding, communicating, and correcting students' use of the structure of English orthography, patterns, and rules informing single- and multi-syllabic words. You will also use assessment data to explicitly plan and teach Tier II and III interventions (in line with IEP/504 expectations, including students with diverse learning needs, such as dyslexia). Understanding how to teach all steps in an explicit phonics lesson, including high-frequency words, irregular words, syllable types, and the meaning of affixes/roots, as well as selecting appropriate decodable, instructional-level texts, is essential for developing students' phonics skills in context.

  • IDA 4A: Integrate essential principles and practices of structure literacy instruction.
  • IDA 4B: Examine considerations for phonological and phonemic awareness.
  • IDA 4C: Implement considerations for phonics and word recognition.
  • IDA 4D: Apply considerations for automatic, fluent reading of text.

In this badge, you will apply considerations for automatic, fluent reading of text by selecting and using fluency-building routines, apps, computer games, and instructional materials to build word recognition/automaticity. You will also practice identifying students' frustration, instructional, and independent reading levels by assessing students' oral reading fluency and prosody. Based on these assessments, you will develop goals and objectives with students and support students, including students with diverse learning needs, in using assistive technology.

In this badge, you will implement considerations for vocabulary development by creating vocabulary-building routines through informal assessments of students' vocabulary, selecting reading materials that expand students' vocabulary knowledge, and fostering a rich language environment.

  • IDA 4G: Apply considerations for written expressions.

In this badge, you will apply considerations for written expression by teaching foundational writing skills and composition, and adapting spelling and writing instruction using technology. Consideration will be given to students with diverse learning needs, such as dyslexia.
