Julie Anderson Schroeder

Julie is a 2003 graduate and is in the process of writing a series of children's Bible stories designed to teach reading.

Suzy Miesse

Suzy is a 2012 Elementary Education / Exceptional Needs Education graduate and former member of the IWU women's soccer team. She is also the founder of Kick It to the World, an organization with a mission to provide children with soccer balls all over the world. She and others collect donated soccer balls to send with missionaries and with collegiate teams going on missions trips over school breaks.

Samantha Rodick Schwarze

Samantha is a 2010 Elementary Education graduate from the IWU School of Teacher Education. She and her husband Sean are missionaries through Global Partners. They are currently serving in Australia, partnering with the Yeppoon Wesleyan Methodist Church. In serving overseas, Samantha has been able to combine her passion for missions and her love for children.

Jessica Frasso

Jessica graduated with a teaching degree from IWU in 2008. She writes: "After graduation, God placed the perfect job for me right in my lap! I'm currently in my third year of teaching fourth grade at a Christian bilingual school in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I love it!"

Liz Howerth

Liz is a 2008 Elementary Education graduate of the School of Teacher Education. She writes: "When I think about where I find myself now, I am reminded of how blessed I feel to serve a God who does 'immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine' (Ephesians 3:20). I have learned that teaching is a degree that can be used in a variety of ways to match one's unique passions and desires. My journey started immediately after graduating from Indiana Wesleyan when I moved to Prague, Czech Republic, and taught at an international school where I had done my student teaching the previous semester. I am so thankful that the program offered the international student teaching option because it provided a way to combine two of my passions - children and other cultures. I was able to glean from teachers all around the world and learn invaluable life lessons…. I could not have asked for a better program to prepare me for the reality of teaching than IWU's."

Organizations

In choosing education as a profession, you are beginning a journey that will not end at the completion of a course or graduation from the major. It is one of our stated goals to encourage students to engage in memberships with professional organizations and in this way create opportunities to continue learning outside the classrooms and beyond the University. We invite you to consider joining one of the organizations below as a supplement to your coursework. The benefits of this activity will be a great catalyst for your education and career as a teacher.

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

The purpose of the IWU Council for Exceptional Children is to advance the education of individuals with exceptionalities and to promote related educational, scientific and charitable purposes. The IWU Council intends to assist and provide support to the Indiana state unit of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in all its efforts on behalf of persons with exceptionalities. We strive to reach out to the surrounding community by partnering with local school corporations in a variety of ways (e.g., tutoring students with exceptional needs, Autism Theater Group, book drives, etc.). The IWU chapter is sponsored by Professor Amy Forshey and involves members in scholarship and service activities, including presentations at the Learning Disabilities Association of Indiana annual conference.

Kappa Delta Pi (KDP)

Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education, was founded in 1911 and was one of the first discipline-specific honor societies. Its membership is limited to the top 20 percent of those entering the field of education. Kappa Delta Pi claims over 600 chapters and more than 40,000 members. Its motto is "Knowledge, Duty, Power," and its mission is to sustain an honored community of diverse educators by promoting excellence and advancing scholarship, leadership and service. The IWU chapter is sponsored by Dr. Mary Seaborn and actively engages members in activities and events preparing them for service as professional educators.

Student Education Association (SEA)

The IWU Student Education Association provides the community with educational opportunities open to public and private schools, teachers, and residents of Marion and the surrounding areas. SEA also provides students with opportunities to discuss their clinical, practical and student teaching experiences as well as have fellowship and informal conversation about issues that are of interest to pre-service teachers. SEA is open to all students who have declared education as their major.
