PREPARING TO TEACH OTHERS THE STORIES OF THE PAST

A Social Studies Education degree includes courses in the various disciplines of the Social Sciences. Coursework also includes professional education classes that prepare students to teach in public and private middle school and high school classrooms.

IWU's Social Studies Education (Bachelor of Science) program provides its majors with a conceptual framework within which the "what" and the "how" of student learning can be developed. The program is designed to gain knowledge of ourselves, our neighbors, and our world to acquire understanding and to exercise discernment. Its focus is to inspire life-long learning in the next generation of world-changers. IWU's SSE program uniquely prepares students for certification in three or four Social Studies disciplines and encourages a minor or a second major in a particular field of study. These program expectations enhance prospects for employment and equip graduates for advanced degrees. This major is designed to meet the certification standards of the Indiana Department of Education and the national accreditation requirements of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and is recognized by the National Council for the Social Sciences (NCSS).

If you sense a calling to bring a Christian worldview and context to your teaching career, you should consider majoring in Social Studies Education at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Faculty

Whether right out of grad school or after some years in the profession, IWU professors moved to the head of the class. Was it a passion for sharing the field of their dreams? Was it a divine prompting to make students their business? Or were they looking for a place where they could teach their profession and still share a profession of faith? No doubt it was all of these.
