The University Singers of Indiana Wesleyan University, under the direction of Dr. Michael Dennis, were the featured performers in the Charles Price Jones Concert on Sept 29, 2019 at Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness (USA) in Gary, Indiana. Singers were joined by members of the Gary Civic Chorale, the Christ Temple Choir, members of the Gary Civic Symphony, and saxophonist Michael Carson as they performed hymns from the church’s founder, Bishop Charles Price Jones (1865-1949). Jones was a brilliant preacher, gifted composer, pioneering educator, and gospel writer whose persistence and faith in Jesus has inspired untold numbers of believers. His hymns, with their strong biblical words and effective melodies, have been published in hymnals from various denominations. Tonight’s concert featured fourteen of his hymns, five of which were arranged for SATB choir by Dr. Dennis – “I’m Happy with Jesus Alone,” “Jesus My All in All,” “Deeper, Deeper in the Love of Jesus,” “How Great the Mercy,” and “Jesus Only.” In the final selection in the concert, Dr. Dennis directed the mass choir and instrumentalists as they performed his arrangement of “Jesus Only.” Bishop Dr. Dale Cudjoe, pastor of Christ Temple and presiding Bishop in the Northern Diocese, presented Dr. Dennis and the University Singers with a plaque commemorating their work and investment in perpetuating the hymns and ministry of Charles Price Jones.
