High School Math Day
Each spring, the mathematics departments of Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University co-host an event for local high school students on one of their campuses. High School Math Day, designed to showcase possible future studies in STEM-related fields, features a series of mathematical activities as well as campus tours. The activities are led by the university faculty and undergraduate math majors. Past activities have included a “math trail” leading students to find math through the campus, a game show exploring various probability problems, and other hands-on activities that portray mathematical concepts.
Approximately 100 students, brought to campus by their math teachers, typically participate. “It’s great working together with another university for the common goal of high school students seeing a side of math they may not see otherwise,” said Dr. Daniel Kiteck, associate professor of mathematics. “We get to help them experience math in a fun and interactive way, hopefully helping their perspectives on math to grow more positive.”
