IWU Media Communication students brought home a record number of awards at the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters 2012 competition. The student radio and TV entries garnered 10 awards, coming in at second place in the overall points for the TV categories.
Matt Green (Dec. ’11) received First Place in the TV Videography category, for his feature story on a Wabash Motocross race that aired on the WIWU-TV Crossroads program.
Crossroads on WIWU-TV also brought home First Place in the TV Newsmagazine category for a Fall 2011 episode featuring stories by three IWU students.
Senior Crossroads Producer Jaclyn Heck contributed a feature on Fairmount residents’ memories of James Dean. Senior Amanda Johnson contributed a segment on the IWU Theatre Guild production of “Tuesdays With Morrie”, and Matt Green’s motocross feature was also part of the award-winning show.
IWU also received First Place in the TV News Anchor category for an on-camera demonstration submitted by Senior Chase Evans. Evans was a contributor to the student newscast, Spectrum News, which won Third Place honors for TV newscast. He’s also contributed to IWU sports coverage on WIWU-TV for the last 3 years, including regular feature stories on Wildcat Week.
Several students also won Second Place awards for TV News Package – Chase Evans, for a story on a local business, Video In-Depth – Jaclyn Heck for a feature on Marion Ambulance Drivers, and Corporate Video – Josh Campbell, Russ Clark, Britney Holmberg and AJ Hoke for a promotional video produced for Marion business Moorehead Communications.
On the radio side, Senior Tim Decker received Second Place in the Radio Sportscast category, for his weekly local sports segment “The Windup“, heard on 94.3 The Fortress, WIWU-FM. and Production Director, AJ Hoke won Second Place in the Radio Spot category for a promotional piece called Geography.
Alisha Stevens (Dec ’11) received a Third Place award in Videography, for a Crossroads feature story on Grant County’s Hainlen Orchards.
The Indiana Association of School Broadcasters represents high schools, colleges and universities statewide. Other schools receiving awards included Ball State University, Valparaiso, Southern Indiana, Taylor and Goshen College.
