Communication Alum Katy Heck (’09) continues to work on the IWU campus and live out her communication skills every day. Heck started almost immediately after graduation with IWU Admissions, traveling around the midwest talking to prospective students. She is now working in the admissions call center and is in charge of about 20-30 student workers.
Heck did not start out her college career thinking she would be where she is now. Coming into IWU pre-declared, she met other communication majors and was intrigued by their versatility of what they were studying. One of the things that she loved about the Communication and Theatre division was the multiple directions that students could expand. She ended up graduating with a degree in Public Relations.
Heck remembers many positive interactions with IWU Com/Theatre faculty and staff.
“The classes are challenging but the skills I have learned have helped me so much since I have graduated. A lot of the professors, from what I know, are great people and are invested in the students. They challenge you because they know that you will be able to use those experiences in the real world.”
The skills she learned in her communication classes do not go unnoticed. “We use a lot of interpersonal communication. Even down to things as far as non-verbals from the prospective families. Really what we do is establish relationships between the prospective students and the school,” she said.
“When it’s all said and done, God gave each of us different and unique ways to communicate to each other. I think communication is about embracing those gifts and trying to positively impact others in a Christ-like way.”
For now, Heck is enjoying working at Indiana Wesleyan and plans on being around for many years.
