Serving students in Northeast IN
Hello! My name is Deidre Kankovsky, and I have the privilege of serving students across Northeast Indiana. I graduated from IWU in 2019 with a degree in psychology and minors in leadership studies and music. I was so blessed by the community of students and staff at Indiana Wesleyan that I couldn’t help but come back and help others in their college journey.
What I love most about being an admissions counselor is having the chance to walk alongside students as they learn who the Lord has made them to be, and what they are being called to do to best serve His kingdom. I know the college search process can be challenging, but you don’t have to walk it alone; please reach out and let me know how I can best support and serve you during this time. You are in my prayers, and I cannot wait to serve you!
My favorite thing about IWU is how known and loved students feel in the community. The transition into college can be difficult, and mine was made so much easier by fellow students, faculty and staff who cared well for me and made IWU truly feel like home. I have never been in a place where the Lord’s presence is felt so strongly and where students follow Him so passionately. The institution also provides students many opportunities to lean into how the Lord has called them to serve others through their specific strengths and talents, and uses the Life Calling program to empower students who don’t yet know what they’re called to study.
Hands down, my favorite thing to do on campus is grab coffee from McConn with dear friends, mentors and professors. I also love to walk, skate and bike around campus and go to sporting events, musical performances and art exhibits to support our very talented Wildcats.
Hearing others’ stories and walking with them through the college journey is something that gives me life. Exploring options with you and really diving into who the Lord is calling you to become over the next few years is something I value deeply. I also find that, as a first generation college student, I love being able to guide students through the complexities of college admissions and help make higher education more accessible for those who are in the shoes I was in only a few years ago.
What I believe makes IWU stand out as an institution is how students are not just developed academically in the classroom, but how they are deeply valued and cared for through the communities in their residence halls, athletic teams and other areas on campus. I love the intentionality of our campus to see, know and love students and to create an atmosphere of home.
I am most inspired by those on campus who love others deeply and authentically, while exhibiting hospitality, wisdom and compassion. It’s impossible to explain how empowered I have been by the incredible mentors I’ve met at Indiana Wesleyan, and seeing them love others so genuinely inspires me.
You can usually catch me grabbing coffee with friends, gardening or traveling/exploring new places (all while listening to some good jazz).
I recommend visiting all of the schools you’re considering. Drop by each university to see what campus life is like through classes, residential life, community, etc. This can help you make those tough decisions! I also recommend getting to know the IWU community by visiting campus, attending an event and talking to current students. This is one of the best ways to learn about the IWU experience.
