MARION, IN - Three multimedia students from Indiana Wesleyan University won honors in a statewide journalism competition hosted by the Woman’s Press Club of Indiana (WPCI). Owen Hnatyshyn and Kaitlyn Smith each won first-place awards, and Sydney Leyerle won a second-place award.
WPCI will celebrate these students along with the other 11 statewide winners at a banquet on May 6 in Indianapolis. The journalism contest received 47 entries from across Indiana.
Owen Hnatyshyn won two first-place awards in the collegiate category, one in sports writing and the other in opinion/editorial/review writing. Hnatyshyn is an IWU senior studying mass communication and sports communication. His work will advance to the national competition at the National Federation of Press Women Conference, which is planned for June 22-24 in Cincinnati.
Kaitlyn Smith won a first-place award in the collegiate category for a podcast created and produced by students. Smith is a senior at IWU, majoring in strategic communication and marketing. Sydney Leyerle received a second-place award in the collegiate category for opinion/editorial/review writing. Leyerle is an IWU sophomore studying multimedia communications.
“Our contest shows the breadth of accomplishment our talented communicators can achieve,” said Gene Asher, WPCI contest chair. “At the banquet, the audience always is wowed when they hear about our entrants’ work as they receive their awards.”
