Fourteen Indiana Wesleyan University students had the opportunity to attend an event featuring speaker Charles S. Shapiro, a former US Ambassador to Venezuela from 2002 to 2004. The event, titled Venezuela’s Evolving Crisis: From Bad to Worse, focused on the political and economic crisis occurring in Venezuela. It was held on March 21 in downtown Indianapolis.
The students, alongside IWU International Relations professor Dr. Chan Shin, were able to interact with Shapiro after his address by asking questions and taking photos with him. Students were also able to participate in a networking dinner before the talk, which gave them an opportunity to interact with students from other universities and people from the community.
“It was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the situation in Venezuela and get to know people outside our campus,” said Shin, who is also the advisor for IWU’s Association of International Relations. “The organizer of the event later told me that the ambassador was very impressed with the quality of our students and he thoroughly enjoyed his time with them.”
The event was organized by the Indiana Council on World Affairs, a non-profit organization based in Indianapolis whose aim is to “foster public understanding of world conditions and US foreign policy through forums, lectures, conferences and publications” since 1955.
