As part of New Student Orientation, over 800 freshmen and staff leaders from Indiana Wesleyan University spent Wednesday, Aug. 29 serving the Grant County community as part of an annual event called Acts of Kindness.
This year, IWU sent out 39 different groups to work on various service projects throughout the local community. Each group consisted of at least one IWU staff leader. Groups completed projects at a variety of organizations, businesses, churches and neighborhoods, including the following:
- Allen Elementary School – trash pickup, weeding
- Community School of the Arts – general maintenance, painting
- Fairmount Wesleyan Church – cleaning, painting, organizing
- Marion Fire Department – waxing fire trucks
- Gas City Park – painting benches and picnic tables
- Grant County Rescue Mission – cleaning, painting, sorting donations
- Marion Design Co. – Caring for the block and assembling community library
- Marion General Hospital – clearing walkway and grounds for cancer walk
- Marion Grant County Humane Society – Cleaning, yardwork, painting
- Marion National Cemetery – folding flags, cleaning headstones
- Riverview Elementary School – trash pickup, landscaping
- The Boys and Girls Club – painting, replacing ceiling tiles
- The King’s Academy – cleaning, moving, yardwork
“Community Service is a key component to building community, developing personal identity and maturing in one’s spiritual growth,” said Jason Stephens, associate dean for student engagement. “Indiana Wesleyan is proud to serve our community in this way!”
