Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (WSJ/THE) College Rankings awarded Indiana Wesleyan University the No. 6 slot on its 2018 Top Schools for Engagement list, which recognizes institutions where students feel most engaged.
The engagement score in the WSJ/THE monitors how challenged and inspired students feel inside and outside the classroom, as well as the breadth of courses their schools offer. Scores were measured mainly through approximately 189,000 survey responses over the past two years.
With a four-way tie at the No. 6 spot, IWU sits amongst 10 other high-engagement schools, seven of which are also religiously affiliated institutions. The Wall Street Journal published an article about the student engagement ranking, which comments, “[Religious] institutions often include in their missions the education of the entire student—body, mind and soul—and put a premium on group projects, mentoring and self-reflection.”
“Christ has called us to love God with our whole beings, with all our body, soul, spirit and mind,” said Jason Stephens, associate dean for student engagement. “At IWU, we challenge students academically; but we also strive to support students in their holistic health. We have found that when students know they are cared for in a more personal and holistic way they often have more positive interactions with faculty and staff, engage their education in more meaningful ways, and make a difference in the world around them.”
At IWU, students live and learn in a Christ-centered environment that is focused on developing students in character, scholarship and leadership. Chapel services three times weekly bring the University community together to worship and pray. Other regular occurrences include campus-wide prayer walks, student-led worship events, and concerts with major artists like Lecrae and NEEDTOBREATHE.
