Marion Design Co. hosts screening of “After Coal”

Marion Cinema House, located at Marion Design Co. on 302 S. Washington St., will present a free screening of the film “After Coal” at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 9. The film will be followed by a Q&A session with the award-winning director Tom Hansell.

“After Coal” is an hour-long documentary film that explores how mining communities survive after the coal industry shuts down. The documentary introduces the viewers to coalfield residents who share their stories from the front lines of their transition away from fossil fuels.

Hansell is an award-winning filmmaker and installation artist who lives and works in the Appalachian Mountains. His installations have appeared in galleries from California to Vermont. He has twenty years of experience teaching students and adults throughout the U.S., as well as China and Indonesia, how to create media about their communities.

"We are so thrilled to welcome award-winning director Tom Hansell to Marion,” said Henrik Soderstrom, professor of art and design at IWU. “His depth of insight and hope are sure to spark new conversations and fresh ideas."

The event is open to the public.
