IWU volleyball coach named to NCCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2018

The NCCAA national office has announced Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball coach Candace Moats as part of the NCCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2018.

“I feel so honored and humbled at the same time to be selected to the Hall of Fame for the NCCAA,” said Moats. “As a young coach first starting out it was the people who embodied this organization that encouraged me, believed in me, and challenged me to grow and become the coach and mentor I am today. I cannot be more grateful for this huge family of dear brothers and sisters. Thank you to all of you, but especially thanks to the three NCCAA Universities -- Crown College, Grace College, and now Indiana Wesleyan University -- who gave me the opportunity to minister to hundreds of student-athletes who have changed my life.”

Moats completed her 34th year of coaching this fall with tenures at Crown (Minn.), Grace (Ind.), and IWU. She has a career record of 817-338 (.707) and is 500-183 (.732) in 16 years at IWU.

Moats has found success at the national stage in all three of her stops. She has reached the NAIA National Championship eight times with one appearance at Grace and seven at Indiana Wesleyan. Moats has won five NCCAA National Championships with two at Crown, one at Grace, and two more at IWU and she is a four-time NCCAA National Coach of the Year.

She has spent the past 23 years in the Crossroads League and has won 10 regular season championships and 13 tournament championships. In 16 years at IWU, the Wildcats have won eight regular season titles and 13 tournament titles under Moats. Moats has been voted the league Coach of the Year on five occasions.

“Many people focus on athletic achievement and the win/loss record for coaches in the Hall of Fame,” said IWU Director of Athletics Mark DeMichael. “With this being the National Christian College Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Candace is a great inductee because of her heart for ministry. What makes her highly qualified for this honor is that she does this as a calling for ministry to the student-athletes that play on her teams. Her commitment to serving Christ, spiritual discipleship, and mentorship as well as athletic excellence and winning championships is what make her a Hall of Famer.”

Moats will be officially inducted at the Hall of Fame Banquet on May 31, 2018 during the NCCAA Annual Convention held in Greenville, South Carolina.
