GROW Nurses, an Indiana Wesleyan University grant-funded initiative in the School of Nursing, is coordinating an air demonstration event on March 14 at 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. that will take place at Tucker Career and Technology Center in Marion, Indiana. The private demonstration will feature a helicopter sent from Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for the purpose of educating high school students interested in the nursing field. Flight nurses from the hospital’s Lutheran Air flight program will give a tour of the aircraft, provide an overview of flight nursing, discuss related career options and answer students’ questions regarding a future health career. An estimated 50 junior and senior high school students are expected to attend.
“By showcasing flight nursing, students are able to learn through a hands-on experience that nursing occurs in a variety of challenging settings,” said Coordinator of GROW Nurses Carol Bence. “GROW Nurses is very appreciative of Lutheran Air for offering this learning experience for the students.”
GROW Nurses, which stands for Growing and Raising Our Workforce, began in October 2008 after the program received a $90,000 grant from the US Department of Energy. As a recruitment program, GROW supports and prepares underrepresented populations to utilize their talents, attend college and work in the nursing field. GROW specifically seeks to serve men, African-Americans, Hispanics and first generation college-bound students.
