Top 3 Tips for Future Entrepreneurs

Top 3 Tips for Future Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is daunting but exciting! From forming the vision, organizing a plan, and executing, the process is complex, but the work is rewarding in its own way.

As you consider your journey to starting or growing your business, consider these top three pieces of advice from IWU alumni entrepreneurs that aided them in their experience of starting their own businesses after graduation.

Tip #1: Just DO it.

Kelly Klemmensen (‘16) is the owner of Kelly Klemmensen Photography, and she shared that the fear of the unknown should certainly not limit you from beginning your journey. Starting from scratch is scary, but once you have your plan, be confident and execute the plan.

Uncertainty will always arise, and problems will occur. However, if you never start, you’ll never know how far you can go and grow. Kelly shared, “You never want to live your life thinking, ‘What if I had just…’” Initiate when you can, and from your mistakes, you will learn and become even more confident than when you started.

Tip #2: Remember the Reason WHY You Serve

Kelley also emphasized the importance of keeping focused on your passion for others while you are serving them. “When going to events or attending networking meetings, focus on other people. Truly listen to them, and help them when you can,” Kelley shared. Remember why you serve and who you are serving.

Time is fleeting, and we can become easily overwhelmed by the stress of making decisions, connecting with resources, and solving unexpected issues.  At the end of the day, take time to be grounded and reflect on the ways that you are fulfilling your calling. The steps that you take today, reflecting and focusing on others, will impact your mindset and connections in the future!

Tip #3: Connect with the Community

Last but certainly NOT least, don’t forget to take time to connect with the community. Ronny Morell (‘17), who is the owner and CEO of Morrell’s Scooters, started with only six scooters in Marion, IN, and now, his business has grown tremendously and has 70 scooters in six different cities! He advised, “Connect with as many people in the town as possible… and network, network, network.”

When you are establishing your business, get your foot in the door in the community by networking. You can also strengthen your business through the power of social media and word of mouth. Start following other experts in your industry while building personal connections and meeting your customers. You could potentially gain a partnership through your connections!

Just do it, connect with the community, and take time to remember your passion. Dreams are meant to become a reality, and the IWU community is cheering you on as you chase your dreams of becoming an entrepreneur!
