So, You're a First-Generation College Student?

Being the first person in your family to do anything outside of the expected norm can be intimidating. Don’t be fooled, being the first person in your family to pursue a degree in higher education is no exception. You’ll face obstacles during your time as a student, some more daunting than others. However, there are so many aspects of being a first-generation student that are worth celebrating! We want to provide you with some approaches and mental strategies for a successful student experience.

Acknowledge how far you’ve already come!

You did it! You took the first step toward achieving your goals. Applying for school can be tricky, and you’ve already done that. Each paper is a stepping stone worth celebrating. Each completed class lecture deserves a pat on the back. Each time you choose to be proactive about an assignment, rather than put it off, is worth a moment of pride. Take some time to look back on all of those moments and appreciate how far you've come.

Recognize that your experience is unique.

Comparison is poison. Challenge yourself to not compare your time as a first-generation student to other students. It can be easier to focus on all that you have not accomplished, rather than focus on what you have accomplished this far. Try focusing on the things that you are. You are passionate. You are someone who has already overcome so much. Create a list of what makes you worthy of this experience as a first-generation student. Be kind to yourself.

Learn to celebrate little accomplishments along the way.

Did you get a good grade on an assignment? Did you make it through a tough week? Did you make a new friend in your class? It’s time to celebrate! Treat yourself to dinner from a local small business. Watch a few extra episodes of your favorite show. You’ve earned this! You don’t always need a big reason to throw yourself a little party. Find joy in small accomplishments. Take time to celebrate you.

Surround yourself with people who will cheer you on.

There are many people cheering you on! Choose to intentionally surround yourself with a support system of loved ones who will continually pour into you throughout your time as a student. Do not be afraid to remind your circle of the journey you are on. Whether you’re an on-site or remote student, let your loved ones celebrate you. They are already so proud of you, and we are too!

This experience is going to be (or already has been) overwhelming at times. However, there are long-term rewards with each completed assignment, new friendship, and class lecture that are worthy of joy and pride. You should be so proud of yourself. You’ve come a long way, and you are shining even brighter than before.
