MBA My Way: A Cheat Sheet for Success

Ever want a behind-the-scenes perspective on what it takes to succeed when earning your degree?

Instructors have spoken!

IWU’s new MBA My Way program is a customizable degree that puts the power in your hands as a student. You can choose a standard pace or fast track your degree program, and with specializations, you can become an industry expert in the area of your choice.

But what does it take to excel in this program? And what can you do to prepare to go back to school? Here are a few insider tips for keeping up with your new workload and balancing your schedule, whatever pace you choose.

“Start early.”

Start working on coursework early in the week and try to stay ahead of the workload. This builds in time for those moments when life happens and gives you plenty of time to ask questions about your assignments before the deadline.

“Pick a schedule.”

Decide what your daily schedule will be at the beginning of your program. Some students find early morning hours more productive because there is no one else competing for their time or attention. Some students decide to sit down and work every night at 8 p.m. Others fit their coursework into certain days of the week. Find out what days and times are best for you, then dedicate them to your studies.

“Consider pushing pause.”

Do you have several interests and commitments you’re balancing? Consider what activities might need to be paused for a short period of time to pursue your degree. If you’re finding it difficult to make time for your coursework, you might need to ask for help fulfilling your other commitments or consider coming back to those activities after graduation.

“Get the support of family and friends.”

Negotiate with family and friends about how they can help preserve your space and time to complete your degree. Can the kids carpool to practice with a friend? Can you ask your family for a couple of hours of uninterrupted study time? One of the key factors in student success is having a strong support system of people who will both cheer you on at graduation and find ways to help you be a good student. Behind every success story is a village.

“Talk to your instructor.”

Don’t wait – let your instructor know early if you run into difficulty. Opportunities for work-arounds or allowances dissipate as due dates pass. Reach out before assignments are due. All students encounter challenging material and unusual circumstances. Successful students communicate with their instructor as soon as they see a problem, ensuring there is enough time to get assistance in navigating the issue.
