Stay Calm – You Can Conquer Financial Aid

You’ve probably heard of financial aid. You may already know about some of the resources available to you. If it feels like this topic is too big to absorb, we get it. But don’t panic – we’ve got you covered.

Financial aid is more than just student loans. We hear about student loans a lot these days, but we want you to know you have other options—options you don’t have to pay back. Below, we’ve included some resources to help you make college more affordable.

The four main sources of financial aid:

  1. Federal
  2. State
  3. University, college or school
  4. Non-profit or private organization

Grants | A form of financial aid that you don’t need to repay.

There are several types of grants, most based on financial need. Be sure to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on time in order to be eligible for federal and state grants. Check your FAFSA deadlines here.

Scholarships | A form of financial aid that you don’t need to repay—usually merit-based, meaning you must meet certain requirements to earn it.

Check with the university financial aid office, your local community foundation, and other sources, but be sure to protect yourself from scams. Read this information before you seek scholarships from sources that are new to you.

Discounts | A reduction to the standard cost.

Universities and colleges often offer discounts for students who meet certain requirements, such as his/her current vocation or employer. Wondering if you’re eligible for one at IWU? Click here to see our list of discounts

Loans | Financial assistance that requires repayment.

Students at IWU can explore multiple loan options, from federal loans to loan/grant programs.

Military & Veteran Benefits | Financial assistance available to students who have served or are serving in the U.S. military.

IWU’s definition of those eligible for military-preferred tuition rates includes active duty, National Guard, reserves, retirees, veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, dependents with educational benefits, and Department of Defense employees. Learn more about these benefits at indwes.edu/military.

Tuition Reimbursement or Employer Assistance | Financial aid provided by an employer.

Requirements, amounts, and deadlines for this assistance are all determined by the individual employer. Check with your human resources department to see if your employer offers this benefit.

While some of these options might require more time and legwork to pursue, they can help you start school with minimal stress and graduate with minimal debt. Don’t fear financial aid. We can help you make the most of it.
