Discussion Board Tips: 5 Ways to Make a Good Impression

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, discussion posts are a part of most classes, and they can be a pretty significant part of your grade. Typically, the purpose of a discussion post is to help you reflect and think critically about the course materials (textbooks, articles, videos, etc.). BUT they also help you discuss topics with your classmates, just like you might do in a traditional onsite class.

Here are a few ways you can make the most of your time in discussion boards and leave a lasting impression.

1 | Use the course materials in your post. What did you read about this week? Incorporating those concepts will help you stand out. This is likely required by your professor, but if it isn’t, it will show them you have engaged with the course materials and you’re giving it your best effort. (Don’t forget to cite any materials you use!)

2 | Share your perspective. Whether it’s your personal or professional opinion, you have a perspective to share that’s unique to you. Don’t be afraid to use it in your post if it relates to the topic. Your work experience could bring a new angle to the class conversation.

3 | Ask your classmates questions. Discussion posts have maximum impact when they prompt conversation. Include open-ended questions at the end of your post, or ask your classmates questions about their posts when you respond. Challenge yourself and others to think differently about the topic. Impress your instructor by sparking a lively, constructive discussion.

4 | Respectfully disagree. We show up in online discussions to learn from each other and expand our perspectives. Don’t be afraid to disagree, but be sure to offer an alternative. Don’t just reply, “I disagree.”

5 | Engage with your instructor. When you see them jump into the discussion, join in and keep the momentum of the conversation alive. Don’t be afraid of talking to the subject expert – that may be an important opportunity to garner wisdom from your instructor’s professional expertise.
