Media Communication

For over 25 years, Dr. Randall King has served in universities teaching media communication courses.

Dr. King worked professionally in television news as a reporter and anchor for 3 years at WPDE-TV Florence/Myrtle Beach, SC, and as a newscast producer for 1 year at WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC. He also worked in church media and marketing for two large churches in Texas before entering academia.

Why did you decide to teach at IWU?

Two things drew me to IWU beyond just the great students and Christian mission. The division of communication and theatre was emerging and expanding at the time I came, and I had the chance to build something special with colleagues who were both academically excellent and professionally experienced in the communication field.

The other draw was the chance to lead and expand the work of WIWU-TV with a great group of staff professionals and to get more communication students involved. In nearly 15 years, I’m pleased we’ve done that. Many students have gone on to careers in various media-related fields. We’ve also been able to serve the Grant County area with first-rate programming that connects to the local community through Crossroads, local sports and other events.

I’m an avid movie lover who clicks “Buy” on iTunes far too easily. I also enjoy disc golf when Indiana weather permits and traveling new places with my family.

Advice for a prospective student:

Pick a school where you will grow, academically, spiritually, socially. If you come to IWU Com, get involved, early and often. Our best students don’t stop with the required classes. They’re always hanging out at the TV or radio stations, or Sojourn/GrantCOnnected.net newsroom or the black box theatre. You need to love this field to succeed, and we give you lots of opportunities from the moment you step on campus.
