Biography

Dr. Schaefer served as a registered nurse from 1983 to 1998 on a variety of nursing units of hospitals and private clinics in the Wheeling, West Virginia area which included Medical-Surgical, Oncology, Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation, a Neuro-vascular, and a Cardiac Step-Down Unit.  She also spent four years at a Level I Trauma Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.  After completing her Masters in nursing degree, she began teaching a variety of nursing courses at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling and Adult Medical Surgical Nursing at West Virginia University.  After she completed her doctorate coursework, she and her husband moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she taught for the Huron School of Nursing and Ursuline College in both the graduate and undergraduate programs.  She began teaching for Indiana Wesleyan University in 2013 and has served as the Associate Director of the Post-licensure Division of Nursing for the past three years.  She began her current position as the Assistant Dean of Post-licensure Nursing on January 4, 2016.

Interests

     Dr. Schaefer’s research interests are in the areas of the evaluation of educational strategies and curriculum design and instruction. She has presented numerous times in the United States on strategies to teach nurses how to think and write critically.  She has published chapters in a nursing textbook on the topics of caring and spiritual care.  She is currently an active member of Nurses Christian Fellowship, the current President of the Eta Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and has serve on the Innovations in Faith Based Nursing Conference Planning Committee.  She also teaches an adult Sunday school class at Chapel Pike Wesleyan Church in Marion, IN.
