Biography

Dr. Martha Hawkins DNP has been a nurse since 1989. She began her career with an AND from Somerset Community College in Somerset, Kentucky. In 2002, She completed her BSN and MSN as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in an RN-MSN bridge program at the University of Kentucky. In 2010, She completed her DNP in the inaugural class of Vanderbilt University’s DNP program. She has been teaching nursing since 2010 and, ultimately, wants to be involved in starting a nursing school in Northern Belize. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Post-licensure Nursing division of Indiana Wesleyan University's School of Nursing.

Dr. Hawkins is married to Patrick and serves as the Adult Women’s Sunday School Teacher for her church. She has also been actively involved in medical mission teams with her church since 1997. As part of her work with medical mission teams, she has been involved in using short-term mission teams as educational opportunities for nursing students.

Interests

A research interest for Dr. Hawkins is exploring what students learn from these experiences that affect their practice at home, beyond cultural competence. Dr. Hawkins is also interested in research related to clinical interventions for primary care providers for the treatment of childhood obesity.
