| Lilly Student Research Award
Background: The Lilly Endowment, Inc. awarded Indiana Wesleyan University funds to assist with enhancing scholarship among promising faculty and students. As part of this effort "to recruit and retain intellectual capital," The Endowment funded six new scholarship initiatives at IWU. One of these, The Student Research Initiative, provides $800 stipends for ten undergraduate and five graduate students annually. Recipients of this award will receive funding and mentoring assistance while working with a faculty member. This Initiative will simultaneously assist IWU professors in a wide array of scholarship areas.
Goals:
- To facilitate the learning of promising students
- To facilitate the building of portfolios for students
- To assist faculty in their desire to mentor students in research areas
- To retain more honors students at IWU
- To become more attractive to potential honors students during their selection of college and graduate programs
Criteria:
- All applicants must be full time students. Undergraduates must have a cumulative GPA of honors standing: 3.4 for undergraduates and graduate students (with less than ten graduate hours); 3.5 for graduate students with more than ten graduate hours. GPA is not rounded and should be reported to 2 decimal points.
- Each applicant needs a sponsoring full-time faculty member from one of the three colleges. This professor will agree to collaborate with the student in an approved research initiative. While multiple students may apply under one sponsoring professor, awards will be offered for up to two students except in unusual circumstances.
- The research initiative needs to have a plan for public dissemination of findings. This award is intended to assist in research that leads to scholarship. Student scholarship outcomes are a primary objective and are weighted heavily in the scoring algorithm.
- The research initiative needs measurable outcomes outlined on the application (p. 2).
- A demonstration of scholarship; affix a paper or result of former research to the application.
- The CAS applicant needs to commit to participation in IWU's Celebration of Scholarship (April).
