How to Cite ERIC Documents in APA Format

ERIC Document (Paper or microfiche format)
Jones, J. C. (2000). Webquests as a way to teach social studies         (Report No. ABCD-EE-00-5). Marion, IN: Indiana                     Wesleyan Center for Educational Excellence. (ERIC                     Document Reproduction Service No. ED111111)

ERIC Document (Online Database)

Using a combination of citing an ERIC document (4.16.43) and citing an article from a database (4.16.88) in the The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed., one should cite an ERIC document from the online version of the ERIC Document Reporduction Service as follows:

Jones, J. C. (2000). Webquests as a way to teach social studies (Report No. ABCD-EE-00-5). Marion, IN: Indiana Wesleyan Center for Educational Excellence. (ERIC Document Reproduction Service No. ED111111). Retrieved July 10, 2007, from EBSCOHost ERIC database.
[Note: this is not represented with a hanging indent per APA.]

How to find the information:
  • The author comes from the AU field;
  • the copyright date comes form the PY field;
  • the title comes from the TI field;
  • if an ERIC document contains a report number, it will be found on the document resume sheet of the actual report. It will be clearly labeled Report No., immediately followed by a series of letters and numbers, e.g. Report No. MHEC-2001-RES-15;
  • the publisher and location may or may not be a part of the citation, if missing then just omit from the reference;
  • the ERIC # is from the AN field;
  • the retrieved date is the date you viewed the document online
  • the EBSCOHost ERIC database is the name of the online subscription based database that provided the electronic full content of the ED document.
