Two IWU Workers Injured in Boiler Accident
Two Indiana Wesleyan University maintenance workers were injured about 8:30 a.m. today in a boiler accident in the basement of the former Center School, which IWU now uses for faculty offices and classrooms.
Both workers were taken by ambulance to Marion General Hospital, where one was treated and released and the other was transferred to an Indianapolis hospital. Names of the two workers will be released after their families have been notified of the accident.
Students and faculty members were in classes on the first floor of the building at the time of the accident, but they were not injured. There was no fire, and minor damage was confined to the boiler room.
The accident occurred as the two IWU employees attempted to light the older of two boilers in the basement of the building. The building usually is heated by a newer boiler but, in colder weather, the second boiler is used.
Brendan Bowen, IWU’s Vice President for Operations and Planning, said the accident apparently was caused by a faulty switch on the boiler. Bowen said all required inspections on both boilers were up to date.
Classes scheduled today in the building were moved elsewhere on campus. Students learned of the accident during chapel services and prayed for the injured workers.
IWU is cooperating with the Marion Fire Department and Vectren Energy in the investigation of the boiler accident.
