Residence Hall & Townhouses Approved

Indiana Wesleyan University will begin construction of a new residence hall and as many as three townhouses in the spring of 2009. The latest projects will provide living accommodations for an additional 400 students.

The townhouses will be completed in August 2009, and the residence hall will be completed in August 2010. The IWU Board of Trustees approved the building projects earlier this month, so that the University can respond rapidly to enrollment growth.

South Hall will house 300 men and will be located just south of the North Hall Complex, a women’s residence hall that opened in August 2007. Both buildings are three stories.

South and North Halls will be similar in appearance – and in purpose. Both halls have two wings, one to house freshmen and the other to house upper-class students. The older students serve as mentors for the freshmen.

Each of the new townhouses will house 36 students, providing an additional 108 beds. Locations have not been determined for the two-story townhouses, which accommodate only juniors and seniors.

IWU currently has eight townhouses, with a total of 276 beds. Those townhouses are located along 44th and 45th streets on the south side of campus.

About 3,200 students – a record number for the 21st consecutive year – are enrolled for fall classes on IWU’s Marion campus. About 2,600 of those students live in residence halls.

The addition of South Hall and the new townhouses will raise IWU’s residential capacity above 3,000 students.

Construction also is under way on IWU’s new 3,800-seat chapel auditorium, which is scheduled for completion in January 2010.
