America's Best CollegesIWU Moves up in ‘U.S. News’ Rankings

Indiana Wesleyan University is ranked 28th among Midwest Master’s Universities in the 2009 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” which is published by U.S. News and World Report.

The 2009 rankings represent a steady increase for IWU, which was ranked 31st a year ago and 62nd in 2007. The annual rankings were released Friday.

IWU also was ranked 11th among Midwest Master’s Universities in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” section of the U.S. News report. The formula used to determine which colleges offer the best value relates a school’s academic quality to its overall cost.

The average out-of-pocket cost for IWU students for the 2007-08 academic year was $15,961. The figure takes into account grants based on need that students received. Almost 80 percent of IWU students receive grants based on need.

Master’s universities, according to U.S. News, offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. IWU offers master’s degrees in business administration, management, counseling, education, ministry and nursing.

IWU also has one doctoral program in organizational leadership.

There are 574 master’s universities in the United States.
