Carl Shepherd to Head IWU Board of Trustees

Carl L. Shepherd, Senior Vice President of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, has been named Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Indiana Wesleyan University. Shepherd, a 1974 IWU graduate, has served as a trustee since 1989.

Shepherd succeeds Lyle Reed, who had served as board chairman for five years. Reed will remain on the board but asked to step down as chairman because of increased business responsibilities.

Shepherd, who lives in Carmel, has a master's degree from Ball State University. He was the Chief Operating Officer of Jefferson National Life Insurance Co. before joining Indiana Farm Bureau in 1993.

Shepherd, who is an actuary, is responsible for operating Indiana Farm Bureau's life insurance division.

Shepherd was the chairman of a presidential search committee that recommended in June 2005 that Henry Smith be named IWU's eighth president. Smith became president. July 1.

Shepherd, 53, and his wife Vicki have been married for 30 years. They have three sons, including one who will be a freshman at IWU this fall.
