Full Search Committee in Place
To Seek New IWU President By Alan Miller
4/20/05
The final eight members have been chosen for the Search and Recommendation Committee that will seek a successor to Dr. Jim Barnes as President of Indiana Wesleyan University.
Carl Shepherd, an IWU alumnus who has served on the IWU Board of Trustees since 1989, was chosen April 8 to chair the committee. He is Senior Vice President for Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.
Mr. Shepherd, Dr. Lyle Reed, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Rev. Kerry Kind, General Director of Education and the Ministry for The Wesleyan Church, designated the eight other committee members, including two faculty representatives after receiving input on their selection.
Additional IWU Trustees named to the committee are:
- Dr. Malcolm Evans, Marion, Ind., retired board chairman of Excelcare Management, Inc.
- Edwin Hoover, Lafayette, Ind., retired vice president of marketing for Landis & Gyr.
- Dr. Paula Quinn, Carmel, Ind., owner Cornerstone Properties.
- Karen Hollenbeck, Naples, Fla., retired vice president of administration, W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
- Dr. Harold Bardsley, superintendent of the Indiana North District of The Wesleyan Church.
- Rev. John Bray, Rock Island, Ill., senior pastor of Heritage Wesleyan Church.
Faculty representatives named to the committee are:
- Dr. B.J. Fratzke, Professor of Psychology and Chairperson of the Division of Behavioral Sciences, representing the College of Arts and Sciences
- Dr. Larry Lindsay, Chair of the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership
Dr. Reed, Rev. Kind and Dr. Thomas Armiger, General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church, will serve as non-voting members of the committee.
Additionally, there will be a five-member IWU community advisory board.
"I want to thank each of you for your willingness to serve on the IWU Presidential Search and Recommendation Committee," Mr. Shepherd said in announcing the eight appointments. "This is an extremely important responsibility that we are about to undertake, and I would ask each of you to be much in prayer for the Lord's guidance of our efforts.
"I have a great deal of confidence in the wisdom, both individually and collectively, present on this committee, but God's ways are higher than our ways, and so we must seek His face," he said.
The Search and Recommendation Committee will first review internal candidates for the position of President and will make its recommendations no later than June 15. If there is no internal candidate selected to be president-elect, a search firm will assist with a national search, which is to be completed no later than Jan. 31, 2006.
The Board of Trustees announced April 4 that Dr. Barnes would become IWU's first Chancellor on July 1, 2006 - a day after he completes his 19th year as University president.
