IWU to Open Campuses in Shelbyville & Cincinnati

Indiana Wesleyan University will open regional campuses Monday (Oct. 18) in Shelbyville, Ind., and Cincinnati, Ohio - bringing to nine the number of IWU regional campuses.

The new education centers will house classes for working adults through IWU's Adult & Professional Studies Division, which was started in 1985. Classes, which now are meeting in temporary facilities in both cities, will move Monday to the new buildings.

The $2.3 million Shelbyville Education & Conference Center is located on I-74 in the city's Advanced Technological Park, which is called Intelliplex. Community leaders in Shelbyville invited IWU in early 2003 to establish a regional campus in Intelliplex.

The Shelbyville Redevelopment Commission now will buy the building and lease the first floor to IWU. The commission will lease space on the second floor.

IWU officials estimate an enrollment of 400 in Shelbyville within five years, but community leaders believe the regional campus will attract twice that many students.

The $5 million Cincinnati Education & Conference Center is located on I-75, north of Cincinnati, in West Chester, Ohio. Initially, IWU plans to use only the first floor of the two-story, 30,000-square-foot building.

IWU's five-year goal is to have 1,000 adults enrolled in classes on the Cincinnati campus. Brad Grubb, a former Converse resident who joined IWU 12 years ago, has been named the regional director for Cincinnati.

IWU has five other regional campuses in Indiana: two in Indianapolis and one each in Fort Wayne, Kokomo and Columbus. Other out-of-state campuses are in Louisville, Ky., and Cleveland, Ohio. IWU currently is negotiating the purchase of an office building in Dayton, Ohio, and plans to begin offering classes there in April 2005.

About 23,600 people have earned degrees through IWU's adult education programs, and 8,300 working adults currently are enrolled in classes.
